This paper aims to further knowledge about the inter-Caribbean slave trade to Cuba, shedding light on the acquisition of slaves in Yucatan bound for Havana in 1780. Various archival sources are analyzed to trace the case in question, leading to the conclusion that, despite the restrictions on the slave trade, these purchases responded to a need for labour on the island, and that advantage was taken of the prevailing context of war and the provisions in place regarding the spoils of war, which included human merchandise.
