The article discusses three great symbols which dominate in the liturgy of Easter Vigil, based on the teaching of Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI: light, fire, water and a “new hymn” – Alleluia. These three great symbols are inscribed in and explained to the faithful the mystery of Easter, the mystery of our life. Light and fire dispel darkness of the world, enlighten man and also illuminate human way indicating the direction of our earthly pilgrimage. Water is a symbol of cleansing sins, a symbol of submerging in death and being born as a new creation. A “new hymn” – Alleluia is a sign of joy where the words do not have a big significance.
