191. Ixodes rasus Neumann, 1899. An Afrotropical species, all of whose parasitic stages, including the undescribed larva and nymph, have been found on Artiodactyla: Bovidae, and Carnivora: Canidae and Herpestidae; adults and nymphs have been collected from Mammalia (several orders); immature stages have been recovered from Hyracoidea: Procaviidae, Rodentia: Muridae and Sciuridae, Cuculiformes: Cuculidae, Galliformes: Numididae and Phasianidae, and Passeriformes: Turdidae. Ixodes rasus is a very rare parasite of humans. (2018); see note below Note: the larva and nymph of Ixodes rasus are listed as described in Camicas et al. (1998), but although Clifford et al. (1973) identified these stages from collection material, no formal descriptions of them have been found. Authors differ in describing the pattern of punctations in females of Ixodes rasus; additionally, D’Amico et al. (2018) obtained DNA sequences and redescribed and illustrated a scutal punctation pattern for the male of this species that differs from the pattern figured by other authors. There are also substantial differences in the female hypostomal dentition of Ixodes rasus, as described by D’Amico et al. (2018) and other authors, including the original description in Neumann (1899).
