Although not exactly a practical handbook for the military or full of strategies and theoretical treatises on war, Kekaumenos’ Strategikon is a text unique in its kind because of its social context. Its uniqueness does not stop here. It provides an image of public and private Byzantine life from within. It is a living testimony to historiography, which tries to draw social information about this very sensitive period of Byzantine life. The 11th century is a century of turmoil and gradual loss of territory for the Byzantine Empire.
