How Does Demography Influence the Solidarity Principle in the German Statutory Health Insurance? Due to the age-dependent distribution of benefit expenditure and income subject to contributions, the solidarity principle in the statutory health insurance indirectly leads to an equalisation between members of younger and older cohorts. In the pay-as-you-go health insurance system this equalisation can be achieved at any time in the cross-section of the respective collective. Based on a static-ageing model, however, it can be shown that in an ageing society this only succeeds in the long run at the expense of the younger cohorts.
