Towards the Republican School : Rolland d'Erceville and his Project for a National Education. It is undoubtedly an anachronism to speak of an Ecole Républicaine before year I of the Republic. Yet, already before 1789, in the second half of the XVIIIth century, the idea of a national system of education placed under the responsibility of the State and organized to the benefit of the Nation's prosperity takes shape. The report submitted by Rolland d'Erceville to the Paris Parliament in the wake of the expulsion of the Jesuits is a major contribution to this debate.
