Towards the Republican School : Rolland d'Erceville and his Project for a National Education. It is undoubtedly an anachronism to speak of an Ecole Républicaine before year I of the Republic. Yet, already before 1789, in the second half of the XVIIIth century, the idea of a national system of education placed under the responsibility of the State and organized to the benefit of the Nation's prosperity takes shape. The report submitted by Rolland d'Erceville to the Paris Parliament in the wake of the expulsion of the Jesuits is a major contribution to this debate. Through his proposals one can make out the idea of a state-run, non-confessional structure for public instruction. The grading of the colleges, the training of their teaching staff, the curriculums, the respectives roles of the State and the Church in their management are as many topics dealt with by Rolland d'Erceville. This educative project focuses only on « secondary » education. It only very marginally touches the problems of « primary » education and does not say a word on « higher » education.Sans doute est-il anachronique de parler d'Ecole républicaine avant l'an I de la République. Cependant, dès avant 1789, dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle, l'idée d'une éducation nationale sous la tutelle de l'Etat et pour la prospérité de la Nation prend force. Le rapport de synthèse que Rolland d'Erceville présente au Parlement de Paris au lendemain de l'expulsion des jésuites constitue un moment important de cette réflexion. A travers ses propos se dessine une structure étatique et laïque de l'instruction publique. Hiérarchie des collèges, formation de leurs maîtres, contenu des enseignements, rôle de l'Etat et de l'Église dans leur direction, autant de sujets abordés par Rolland d'Erceville. Ce projet éducatif ne s'intéresse qu'à l'enseignement « secondaire ». Il n'accorde qu'une attention très marginale à l'enseignement « primaire » et ne dit rien de l'enseignement « supérieur ».Naar een republikeinse school : het project van nationale opvoeding van Rolland d'Erceville. Het is een anachronisme te spreken van een republikeinse school voor het jaar I van de Republiek. Maar reeds voor 1789 groeide in de tweede helft van de xvmde eeuw de gedachte van de nationale opvoeding onder staatsgezag voor het algemene belang. Het rapport dat Rolland d'Erceville aan het parlement van Parijs voorlegt na de verdrijving van de jezuieten is een belangrijk moment. Hij schetst daarin een laiciserende staatsstructuur voor publieke opvoeding, een hierarchie van de colleges, de vorming van het personeel, de inhoud van het programma en de onderscheiden roi van staat en kerk. Zijn opvoe- dingsproject omvat slechts het middelbaar onderwijs. Hij heeft weinig aandacht voor het lager onderwijs en zegt niets over het hoger onderwijs.Gerbod Paul.
