Social genealogies differ from traditional genealogies in two ways : firstly, they systematically extract ail information on the social status of successive generations and its evolution ; and secondly, they employ a radiating method : the starting-point is a central nucleus formed by a couple ; from there, the ascendants of both spouses are sought, as well as ail the couple's children and grandchildren, the brothers and sisters of both spouses and their descendants. The attention paid to the female lineage, to youngest children and collaterals enables a better understanding of changes in social status, and of the rôle of circumstances, the individual, and family networks respectively in the evolution or permanence of social structures.
