Beowulf, an epic poem dating back to the VIIIth century, depicts a fledgling society oscillating between civilisation and barbarism, elevation and entropy. The young hero, Beowulf, comes to the rescue of the Danes whose citadel is ransacked by two monsters, and he confronts the beasts which are also, to a certain extent, his doppelgângers. The different facets of barbarism - such as excess and dissension - are at the heart of this text which also celebrates social bonding and the spoken word.
