In 1969, earth diggings permitted to study in the surroundings of the ancient city, the first complete cross-section of Roman levels in Arras on a height of 2 metres and a length of 40 metres. Rescue excavations could only date the major strata. It could yet be established that inhabitation had reached these remote quarters at least as early as under Tiberius, with structures already oriented along the urban squared pattern. A street seems to have been opened under Claudius, then re-opened before disappearing before a great fire which certainly took place around the yeras 160-180 and has already been observed in the neighbouring quarters.
