1) Circumstances of the intervention : A project of urban renovation concerning a large part of the city of Arras was at the origin of the planning of a program of archaeologic research in this district which has proved to be the heart of the antique city. This area, still untouched by constructions, constitutes the last chance to make important observations on the Gallo-Roman urban centre. 2) Research planning : the total area of the plots concerned by the urban renovation operation amounts to about 5 acres, only half of which can be exploited in a systematic manner. The opening of these excavating works will bring about new data on the origin of the city contributing thus to a better knowledge of the urbanisation process and the degree of romanisation of Gallia Belgica cities. The results of the 1984-1985 campaign are already quite promising with the discovery of a part of the Lower Empire surrounding wall and of a building decorated with high quality mural paintings. The archaeologic furniture is plentiful and varied : potteries, coins, glassware... The work is furthermore benefiting from a decent timing thanks to the comprehension of the various interveners : contractors, city authorities. The new data are thus likely to be recorded and processed in the most favourable conditions, making this operation all the more successful.1) Circonstance de l'intervention : Un projet de rénovation urbaine qui concerne une partie importante de la cité d'Arras est à l'origine de l'élaboration d'un programme de recherches archéologiques dans ce quartier qui s'avère être le centre de la ville antique. Ce terrain, préservé depuis toujours des constructions, constitue la dernière occasion d'effectuer des observations importantes sur l'agglomération gallo-romaine. 2) Problématique de la recherche : La superficie totale des parcelles touchées par cette opération d'urbanisation représente environ 2,5 hectares dont la moitié peut être exploitée de façon exhaustive. L'ouverture du chantier apportera de nouvelles données sur les origines de la ville contribuant ainsi à améliorer nos connaissances sur le processus d'urbanisation et le degré de romanisation des villes de Gaule Belgique. Les résultats des campagnes 1984-1985 sont déjà prometteurs avec la découverte d'une partie de l'enceinte du Bas-Empire et d'un bâtiment décoré de peintures murales de qualité. Le mobilier archéologique est abondant et varié : céramiques, monnaies, verreries... Le chantier bénéficie de plus de délais raisonnables grâce à la compréhension des différents intervenants : aménageurs, municipalité. Les nouvelles données pourront donc être enregistrées et traitées dans des conditions favorables, contribuant ainsi au succès de cette opération.1) omstandigheden van de interventie : aan de basis van het opstellen van een opgravings- programma voor deze wijk, het centrum van de antieke stad, ligt een project voor stads- vernieuwing van een belangrijk deel van het huidige Arras. Het onderzoeksterrein dat nooit bebouwd werd biedt een laatste mogelijkheid de gallo- romeinse agglomeratie te observeren. 2) Problemen van het onderzoek : de totale oppervlakte van de betrokken percelen bedraagt ongeveer 2,5 ha. De helft kan uitvoerig onderzocht worden. Het begin van de opgravingen zal nieuwe gegevens opleveren over de oorsprong van de stad, en zal zo onze kennis verdiepen van het verloop van de urbanisatie en de graad van romanisatie van de steden in Belgisch Gallië. De resultaten van de kampagnes van 1984 en 1985 zijn veelbelovend. Men ontdekte immers al een deel van de ringmuur uit het late keizerrijk, en een gebouw dat met kwali- teitswandschilderingen versierd was. Men heeft verder allerlei gebruiksvoorwerpen gevonden : keramiek, munten, glaswerk enz. Het werk op de werf kan op een redelijke termijn gepland worden dank zij het begrip van de betrokken partijen : de projectontwikkelaars en de stad. Het zal dus mogelijk zijn de nieuwe gegevens in de beste omstandigheden te registreren en te behandelen, wat zeker zal bijdragen tot het sukses van deze onderneming.Jacques Alain, Tuffreau-Libre Marie, Belot Eric.
