The study of literacy in the south of the district of Saint-Omer in the XVIII century was completed, in the same manner as in the Maggiolo inquiry, through the study of signatures on marriage certificates. The search of elements of explanation, the putting off the records of widowers and pedlars, and the taking into account of town inhabitants allowed us to reach more significant results than Maggiolo's. In 1786-90, the rates of literacy in this area — husbands 58§, wives 50% — are quite higher than those found by Maggiolo in his sample of communes of the Pas-de-Calais — 48,3§ and 30,9% — and have not been notably altered since 1686-90. The differences in the results depend much more on social differences than on any geographical feature...
