L'enquête Maggiolo, un malentendu ?

The study of literacy in the south of the district of Saint-Omer in the XVIII century was completed, in the same manner as in the Maggiolo inquiry, through the study of signatures on marriage certificates. The search of elements of explanation, the putting off the records of widowers and pedlars, and the taking into account of town inhabitants allowed us to reach more significant results than Maggiolo's. In 1786-90, the rates of literacy in this area — husbands 58§, wives 50% — are quite higher than those found by Maggiolo in his sample of communes of the Pas-de-Calais — 48,3§ and 30,9% — and have not been notably altered since 1686-90. The differences in the results depend much more on social differences than on any geographical feature. The Church, though being the only power that seems to be concerned by the education of masses, relies entirely on the community of inhabitants for this task.L'étude de l'alphabétisation dans le sud-audomarois au XVIIIème siècle a été réalisée, comme dans l'enquête Maggiolo, à partir des signatures des actes de mariage. L'élimination des veufs, des forains, la prise en compte des citadins, la recherche d'éléments explicatifs ont permis d'obtenir des résultats plus significatifs que ceux de Maggiolo. En 1786-1790, les taux d'alphabétisation du sud-audomarois, conjoints 58%, conjointes 50§, sont sensiblement supérieurs à ceux de l'échantillon de communes du Pas-de-Calais de Maggiolo, 48,3 et 30,9§, et Ms n'ont guère évolué depuis 1686-1690. La hiérarchie des résultats dépend bien plus de la hiérarchie sociale que des données géographiques. Seule l'Eglise parait soucieuse de l'éducation des masses mais elle en laisse toute la charge aux communautés d'habitants.De studie van de alfabetisatie in de streek van het "sud-audomarais" in de XVIIIde eeuw steunt zoals het onderzoek van Maggiolo op de handtekeningen op de huwelij- ksakten. Het terzijde laten van de weduwenaars en de kermiskooplui, het opnemen van de stedelingen en het opzoeken van mogelijke verklarende elementen hebben bijgedragen tot een volwaardiger resultaat dan in het Maggiolo onderzoek. In 1786-90 ligt het peil van de alfabetisatie in het sud-audomarois (mannen 58%, vrouwen 50%) aanzienlijk hoger dan in de gemeenten in de Pas-de-Calais van Maggiolo, waar de gemiddelden 48,3% en 30,9% bedroegen, en dat peil is nauwelijks veranderd sedert 1686-90. Hieruit blijkt dat de resultaten veel meer afhangen van de sociale klasse dan van de geografische gegevens.
