Women's Literacy Rate and School Attendance in Northern France During the French Revolution. XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries literacy has not yet, by far, revealed all its secrets, as much in terms of its exhaustive quantification as in terms of interpretation. During the revolutionary period, the global figures of feminine literacy do indeed display a slight increase in the signature rates in comparison with the end of the Ancient Régime. Yet, a notable decrease is perceptible after 1795, a likely consequence of a disrupted school attendance.
