Houdaille Jacques. Signatures at the Time of Marriage from 1740 to 1829. In the INED study of the population of France between 1740 and 1829, it was noted whether or not the marriage registers were signed by the bride and groom. This information is used to appraise the progress made in education in France towards the end of the Old Regime and under the Revolution. Between the beginning and the end of the period, the proportion of those able to sign increased, for young men, from about 40 % to just over 50 % , and, for young women, from around 20 % to 33 %, without a break during the time of the Revolution.
