Hermann of Carinthia was active during the second quarter of the twelfth century in translating scientific works from Arabic into Latin. Of all his extant writings only the De Essentiis, on the nature of the universe, presents his own philosophic ans scientific views. This long dialogue between Hermann and the Englishman Robert of Ketton is important for the history of the diffusion of rare sources and as a landmark pioneer effort to synthesize Arabic and Western Latin thought.
