A newly discovered manuscript of Hermann of Carinthia's De essentiis

Hermann of Carinthia was active during the second quarter of the twelfth century in translating scientific works from Arabic into Latin. Of all his extant writings only the De Essentiis, on the nature of the universe, presents his own philosophic ans scientific views. This long dialogue between Hermann and the Englishman Robert of Ketton is important for the history of the diffusion of rare sources and as a landmark pioneer effort to synthesize Arabic and Western Latin thought. But only three manuscripts of the De Essentiis have been known : one at Oxford, one at London, and one at Naples. The first effort at a complete edition was made by Manuel Alonso in 1946. Realizing that his text was uncritically constructed and full of mistakes, Charles Burnett undertook a new edition, which he published in 1982. Neither Alonso nor Burnett knew a sizeable fragment giving about one fifth of the work. The author had the pleasure of discovering recently this large bifolium, which contains spectacular differences from the other manuscripts, including long passages absent from them. A careful comparison of readings appears to show that the newly found fragment represents the oldest form of the text.Dans le second quart du XIIe siècle, Hermann de Carinthie traduisit en latin des œuvres scientifiques arabes. Ce long dialogue entre Hermann et l'Anglais Robert de Ketton est important pour l'histoire de la diffusion de sources rares, aussi bien que comme témoignage d'un premier effort pour opérer une synthèse de la pensée arabe et de la pensée latine occidentale.
