Recognizing the importance of chronic pain, from Gate Control, through the neuromatrix to pain neuroscience education (PNE).

El dolor crónico es una epidemia del siglo XXI   que plantea múltiples retos tanto a nivel científico-médico como económico, la carga de gastos en salud y determinantes en salud secundaria a estos son de gran importancia para los sistemas sanitarios de todo el mundo. Un inicio para comenzar a despejar este panorama es la intervención del manejo del dolor desde las neurociencias. Desde que salió a la luz la” teoría de las compuertas" de Melzack y Wall en 1965. Posteriormente apareció la "teoría de la neuromatrix" permitió integrar elementos pueden alterar la forma en que reacciona el sistema nervioso central y prolongar el dolor crónico.  Se empieza a conocer la importancia de la plasticidad neuronal. Por último, se reconoce la importancia de la educación en neurociencia del dolor en el tratamiento del dolor crónico. Se prevé que la investigación futura compare con otras intervenciones y evalúe los efectos de esta educación a largo plazo.
