The very complex conflict on the archipelagoes of the South China sea, , goes back to the 1 960s. It triggered a true race for the occupation of many garrisons during the period 1968-1995, whereas a parallel tangle of claims on maritime spaces increased the tension in the region. Tne complexity of the situation, deadlocked in a status quo that appears without solution for the moment, would imply important stakes. However, a closer examination does not show economic stakes (fishing, oil) nor commercial (control of the sea routes) to be decisive. The causes of this conflict are to be found elsewhere, in a growing nationalism, in a peculiar interpretation of the Law of the sea, and in reciprocal mistrust of the various countries.Le conflit sur...
