Friedrich Nietzsche has a widespread reputation as a moral philosopher who lacks morals. This paper challenges both the pervasive image of Nietzsche as an amoralist and the equation of caring with slave morality. Caring is not incompatible with Nietzsche’s ethics and is in fact a better path to serving Nietzsche’s highest-order moral principles than the more egoistic approach typically associated with Nietzsche. Understanding Nietzsche’s debt to Eastern philosophy and its impact on Nietzsche’s metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics can offer a fresh perspective on Nietzsche’s morality as one that not only incorporates but demands care.
