L'armée romaine en Afrique : l'apport des inscriptions relevées par J. Marcillet-Jaubert

J. Marcillet-Jaubert, deceased in September 1987, had copied or revised a great deal of inscriptions found in Algeria. Several of them which are related to the Roman army, are given here. They help to complete or to precise the already quite rich documentation about legates, officers, soldiers of all ranks and veterans of the IIIrd Augusta legio and of its auxiliary units. The revision of the documents called "military lists" has sometimes noticely contributed to improve the reading and the presentation of these documents by adding new names of soldiers and names of their motherlands, or by correcting other such data. A careful examination of these inscriptions principally stresses the fact that some of them have been engraved in at least two or three samples which sometimes show mistakes or present quite different readings.J. Elles permettent de compléter ou de préciser la documentation déjà très riche relative aux légats, aux officiers, aux soldats de tous grades et aux vétérans de la IIIe Légion Auguste et de ses unités auxiliaires. La révision des documents appelés « listes militaires » a notamment parfois permis d'en améliorer considérablement la lecture et la présentation, ajoutant de nouveaux noms ou patries de soldats, en corrigeant d'autres. Un examen attentif de ces inscriptions met surtout bien en évidence le fait que certaines d'entre elles ont été gravées en deux ou trois exemplaires au moins, qui présentent parfois des fautes ou des variantes non négligeables.Dupuis Xavier.
