The Roman army in Africa during the Republican period (256-46 B.C.)

En 1892, René Cagnat dédia un vaste ouvrage à l’armée romaine d’Afrique en commençant son étude au début du principat d’Auguste. Pourtant, les premiers contacts entre les armées de la République romaine et l’Afrique, eurent lieu trois siècles auparavant. Dès 256 av. J.-C., lors de la première guerre punique, une armée est envoyée par Rome afin de combattre Carthage et dès 146 av. J.-C., avec la chute de Carthage et la naissance de la province d’Afrique, les armées romaines furent régulièrement stationnées dans la province. René Cagnat, dans l’introduction de son étude, justifie son choix chronologique, il explique que les sources pour la période républicaine sont trop rares pour permettre une véritable étude de l’armée de la République en Afrique. Le but de cette thèse est d’éclairer cette période d’histoire de l’armée romaine, qui s’étend de 256 av. J.-C. à 46 av. J.-C. Pour cela, nous ferons usage de toutes les sources à notre disposition, littéraires, archéologiques et épigraphiques, en les croisant mais également en les interrogeant à la lumière des dernières évolutions de l’historiographie. Par ailleurs, nous étudierons également le contexte de production des écrits des historiens modernes afin de déconstruire certains poncifs ancrés dans l’historiographie depuis la période coloniale. Cette méthodologie nous permettra de renouveler notre perception de l’armée romaine en Afrique à l’époque républicaine.In 1892, René Cagnat dedicated a vast work to the Roman army in Africa, beginning his study at the beginning of the principate of Augustus. However, the first contacts between the armies of the Roman Republic and Africa took place three centuries earlier. As early as 256 BC, during the first Punic War, an army was sent by Rome to fight Carthage and from 146 BC, with the fall of Carthage and the birth of the province of Africa, Roman armies were regularly stationed in the province. René Cagnat, in the introduction to his study, justifies his chronological choice, explaining that sources for the Republican period are too scarce to allow a true study of the army of the Republic in Africa. The aim of this thesis is to shed light on this period of Roman army history, which extends from 256 BC to 46 BC. To do so, we will make use of all the sources at our disposal, literary, archaeological and epigraphic, by crossing them but also by questioning them in the light of the latest developments in historiography. In addition, we will also study the context of production of the writings of modern historians in order to deconstruct certain clichés anchored in historiography since the colonial period. This methodology will allow us to renew our perception of the Roman army in Africa during the Republican period
