In the modern, nation-state of Japan, three epidemic diseases (cholera, syphilis and tuberculosis) had a great impact on the establishment and development of the public hygiene system. While the institutional aspect of the system developed, its substantial ideas and concepts needed to be introduced to the public. The people were educated and enlightened with the knowledge of hygiene in order to improve their everyday lifestyle similar to the western way. It is said that the promotion of the hygienic thought introduced in the Meiji era had a great impact on the way people perceived how they lived and took care of their bodies.
