During the 19th century, industrial and universal exhibitions were held by the great powers, and the populations of their colonial empires were also exhibited to the public as scientific objects or "exotic" curiosa. Far from being limited to the West, this historical dynamic involved all modern powers at the beginning of the 20th century, as is shown in the present article.
