ABSTRACT Several hypotheses concerning the origin of the non Badegoulian Magdalenian have been put forward, but none has been definitively retained. This preliminary work is based on the typological study of two new series from sites discovered in the Ardeche gorges and correlated to the Magdalenian II, through the intermediary of the local Salpetrian and an early Magdalenian containing microliths. The existence of this early Magdalenian with microliths had already been anticipated in the sequence from Salpêtrière cave (Gard).
