The Isturitz cave site is a major site for the understanding of the franco-cantabrian Magdalenian, but it was excavated relatively early (first third of the 20th century). Thus, the validity of the stratigraphic divisions made by the original excavators — and still used today for the study of their collections — are not beyond question. This paper presents a critical review of the available stratigraphic and historiographic information on the Magdalenian sequence from the cave's Grande Salle (Great Hall).
