Syriac Book Illumination. Liturgy, Image and Poetry, 11th-13th centuries

Fondé sur un corpus de vingt-cinq lectionnaires des Évangiles, produits pour l'usage de communautés chrétiennes de langue syriaque, entre le milieu du XIe et la fin du XIIIe siècle et à travers une aire géographique couvrant le nord de l'Irak et le sud de la Turquie actuels, ce travail explore l'art du livre dans les Églises syriaques à l'époque médiévale dans ses aspects matériels et spirituels. Cet ensemble de manuscrits fragmentaire et dispersé à travers différentes collections est resté méconnu en-dehors de quelques publications de synthèse et sa documentation a bénéficié de numérisations récentes et du regain d'intérêt pour les christianismes orientaux.L'étude du contenu liturgique des manuscrits révèle de multiples variantes rituelles qui caractérisent les deux principales Églises de tradition syriaque, l'Église syro-orthodoxe et l'Église de l'Est. La répartition chronologique des manuscrits met en évidence des liens étroits entre l'évolution du système de lectures qui caractérise les lectionnaires et le développement de leurs décors. Le milieu du XIe et la première moitié du XIIIe siècle ressortent comme deux périodes fastes. Les communautés syriaques semblent alors avoir tiré parti d'un contexte politique mouvementé et en constante évolution. La localisation des lieux de production confirme la place déterminante des monastères parallèlement à l'existence de centres urbains. L'examen des colophons et des notes de possession contribue à une meilleure compréhension de la constitution et du fonctionnement des ateliers, révélant l'identité des artisans impliqué dans la réalisation des lectionnaires. Aux côtés des moines et des diacres, chargés des aspects techniques, le rôle privilégié des évêques se reflète dans le caractère somptuaire du livre illustré dont la production peut aussi pouvaient impliquer tout un ensemble de personnes. Relayé par l'intense circulation des artisans et des livres, le réseau d'ateliers qui émaillait la Haute-Mésopotamie semble avoir bénéficié du soutien des familles de marchands et de donateurs soucieux de leur salut.L'analyse spectrométrique d'une partie des manuscrits a permis une réflexion sur l'économie du livre à partir des substances colorantes employées par les peintres, tandis que l'examen technique des miniatures laisse entrevoir l'intervention de différents artisans spécialisés selon des modalités propres à chaque lieu de création. La perpétuation de schémas iconographiques hérités de l'Antiquité tardive et communs aux chrétientés orientales apparaît comme l'appropriation et la revendication de l'orthodoxie préchalcédonienne au sein de milieux syriaques érudits et fait pendant à un phénomène comparable bien documenté dans la littérature patristique.La comparaison stylistique des manuscrits confirme l'existence de traditions régionales marquées et leur étroite interaction avec les arts du livre arménien, byzantin et islamique, tout en soulignant l'originalité et les spécificités de l'enluminure syriaque. À ce titre, l'étude des images au prisme des réminiscences liturgiques et hymnographiques qui transparaissent dans la plupart des miniatures offre un aperçu d'une culture religieuse façonnée par l'écrit, la parole et le chant, imprégnée des représentations mentales qu'ils suscitent.Based on a corpus of twenty-five Gospel lectionaries produced for the use of Syriac-speaking Christian communities, between the middle of the eleventh and the end of the thirteenth centuries and across a geographical area covering northern Iraq and southern Turkey, this work studies book illumination in the Syriac Churches in the medieval period in its material and spiritual aspects. This fragmentary set of manuscripts, scattered throughout different collections, has remained little known outside of a few publications, and its documentation has benefited from recent digitisations and renewed interest in Eastern Christianity.The study of the liturgical content of the manuscripts reveals multiple ritual variants that characterise the two main Syriac traditions : Syrian-Orthodox and East-Syriac. The chronological distribution of the manuscripts reveals close links between the evolution of the readings system that characterises the lectionaries and the development of their illustration. The middle of the 11th century and the first half of the 13th century stand out as two prosperous periods : the Syriac communities seem to have taken advantage of a turbulent and constantly changing political context. The location of the production sites confirms the determining role of the monasteries, in parallel with the existence of urban centres. The examination of colophons and owner's notes contributes to a better understanding of the constitution and functioning of the workshops, revealing the identity of the craftsmen involved in the production of the lectionaries. Alongside the monks and deacons, who were responsible for the technical aspects, the privileged role of the bishops is reflected in the sumptuary character of the illustrated book. Its costly production may also have involved a whole group of faithful. Supported by the intense circulation of craftsmen and books, the network of workshops dispersed throughout Upper Mesopotamia seems to have benefited from the support of merchants and donors concerned with their salvation.The spectrometric analysis of a part of the manuscripts has laid the foundations for a reflection on the economy of the book based on the colouring substances used by the painters, while the technical examination of the miniatures suggests the intervention of different specialised craftsmen according to the modalities specific to each place of creation. The perpetuation of iconographic patterns inherited from Late Antiquity and common to Eastern Christianity shows the appropriation and vindication of pre-Chalcedonian orthodoxy within scholarly Syriac circles, and parallels a comparable phenomenon well documented in patristic literature.The stylistic comparison of the manuscripts confirms the existence of strong regional traditions and their close interaction with Armenian, Byzantine and Islamic book arts, while at the same time highlighting the originality and specificities of Syriac illumination. In this respect, the study of the images through the prism of the liturgical and hymnographic reminiscences that appear in most of the miniatures offers a glimpse of a religious culture shaped by the written word and song, and impregnated with the mental representations that they give rise to
