Le Sorgho au Burundi

Abstract Studies about Burundi have generally concentrated upon cow and neglected sorghum. This plant was, however, at the center of symbolism for legitimating royal authority, notedly during the muganuro, a yearly sowing ceremony that, celebrated till 1928, brought together a dynastic drum cult, a farming rite, a national holiday and an occasion for periodically renewing the king's power. Combining the calendars of lunar months and of seasons, the muganuro was held at a propitious time in the farming cycle. It can be put in parallel with the firstfruit ceremony, within families, for presenting eleusine. These two cereals, associated with cattle-herding, represented an ancient phase of rural history, before the diffusion of plaintain or of American beans.Résumé Le sorgho a été négligé dans les études du Burundi au profit de la vache. Il est pourtant au cœur de la symbolique qui légitimait le pouvoir royal, notamment à l'occasion de la fête annuelle des semailles. Cette fête, le muganuro .associait un culte du tambour dynastique, un rituel agraire, une véritable fête nationale et le renouvellement périodique de la puissance du mwami (le roi). Célébrée jusqu'en 1928, elle rythmait le temps social, parallèlement à un rituel, sans doute plus ancien, celui des prémices de l'éleusine effectué dans les familles. Articulant le calendrier des mois lunaires et celui des saisons, le muganuro se situait à un moment très favorable sur le plan agronomique. Les deux céréales, associées à l'élevage, ont représenté une étape ancienne de l'histoire rurale, précédant la diffusion du bananier et du haricot américain.Chrétien Jean-Pierre.
