Abstract Studies about Burundi have generally concentrated upon cow and neglected sorghum. This plant was, however, at the center of symbolism for legitimating royal authority, notedly during the muganuro, a yearly sowing ceremony that, celebrated till 1928, brought together a dynastic drum cult, a farming rite, a national holiday and an occasion for periodically renewing the king's power. Combining the calendars of lunar months and of seasons, the muganuro was held at a propitious time in the farming cycle. It can be put in parallel with the firstfruit ceremony, within families, for presenting eleusine.
