In the Maroua region of North Cameroon, knowledge of adventitious plants has helped the Peuls and Giziga to optimize time spent weeding and to manage the abandonment of cultivated lands. Today, harnessed farming and inputs tend to marginalize this knowledge for rainy season crops. These techniques, however, can still be used for out of season crops. Since the 1950s, these same peoples have shown a growing interest in the optimization of vertisols. The growing of transplanted sorghum has become the keystone of their agro-system. They have sought to improve a type of fallow, which has helped perennialize the use of vertisols.
