El léxico técnico y los problemas de traducir un arte en la España ilustrada. Les pelleteries et apprêt de cuir de Noël-Antoine Pluche, análisis léxico de la traducción de Esteban de Terreros y Pando

This essay sits across the history of translation and the history of modern Spanish lexicon. The connection between the two dimensions is relevant because of the role played by the translation of foreign works, especially the ones with technical and scientific contents in eighteenth-century Spain. This work aims to contribute to the study of the Spanish techni-cal lexicon through the analysis of the Spanish version of Les Pelleteries et apprêt de cuir, which was part of Le Spectacle de La Nature written by Abbé Pluche (vol. VIII, pp. 550-571), and which was translated by Esteban de Terreros y Pando (1753-1755). The text, which can be considered as the starting point for discourse on leather tanning, offers a significant evidence for the study of issues related to the translation of a technical text. This study is divided into two sections: the first section presents the historical and theoretical framework of the research, providing an outline on translation practices in eighteenth-century Spain, followed by a reflection about the notion of “technical”and the meaning with which it is used in the present study. The second section offers a comparative analysis of the two ver-sions starting by the study of the para-text and offering an overview of the lexical level and the reasons behind the lexical choices.El presente artículo se sitúa en una posición intermedia entre la historia de la traducción y la historia del léxico moderno español. La conexión entre los dos mundos es el resultado del papel que la traducción de obras extranjeras desempeñó en la España dieciochesca, sobre todo por medio de la importación de manuales técnicos y científicos. Como indica el título, el trabajo quiere contribuir a la investigación acerca del léxico técnico español a través del análisis de la versión castellana del discurso Les Pelleteries et apprêt de cuir, fragmento de la obra Le Spectacle de La Nature de abbé Pluche (vol. VIII, pp. 550-571), traducida por Esteban de Terreros y Pando (1753-1755). El texto, que podemos considerar el punto de par-tida del discurso sobre curtido y adobo de cueros, ofrece un ejemplo ilustrativo de léxico té-cnico que, por su natura peculiar, planteará al traductor diferentes tipos de problemas. Este trabajo está dividido en dos partes: en la primera se traza el marco histórico-teórico en el que se desarrolla el análisis, a partir del contexto traductológico de la España dieciochesca, para terminar con el análisis del concepto de técnico y el significado que adquiere en nues-tro estudio. En la segunda parte se ofrece un estudio comparado de los dos textos y consta de dos secciones: una dedicada al paratexto y la otra al análisis del léxico y a los motivos que subyacen a la selección de un determinado equivalente
