A current and controversial issue in contemporary Russian studies is the appraisal of national varieties of Russian, as for example a “Russian variety of Ukraine”. A degree of language variaton has always existed within the huge territories of the former Soviet Union but it has only recently become research object of the sociolinguists of the new independent States.
