Quality Management of Hematology Techniques

Many automated and manual techniques are used in veterinary hematology and quality management is an integral part of ensuring accurate and precise results. Different species with different hematologic properties complicate veterinary hematology and further increase the importance of comprehensive quality management. Preanalytical aspects of hematologic testing are related to animal status, sampling process, and the sample itself. Point-of-care and large hematology analyzers used in reference laboratories have undergone major technical improvements in the last decades and large number of different methods are applied in veterinary hematology. Comparative smear evaluation to ensure standardization in blood film evaluation is a tool that documents competency of laboratory personnel. Statistical quality control is an integral part of laboratory quality systems in veterinary hematology.
