International audienceThe name and location of the 4,000-year-old city of Babylon are known to everyone. But what about the dramatic events in its history? Do we know that on 12 October 539 BC, when the troops of Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, entered the city by surprise after a military campaign lasting barely a month, and put an end to the Neo-Babylonian Empire, a page in world history was turned for ever? The capital of an autonomous empire between the Tigris and the Euphrates was gone for a considerable time. The responsibility for this catastrophe was attributed to Cyrus' adversary, the Babylonian king Nabonidus. He had, it must be admitted, all the appearances against him despite an already long reign of 17 years: usurper, deceitful conqueror of the desert heartland of present-day Saudi Arabia, sacrilegious religious reformer who wanted to promote the god of the Moon to the head of the pantheon to the detriment of Marduk, the god of Babylon. He was probably not strongly supported by the subjects of the empire when he had to face the Persian conqueror. The life of this singular character, who was the last king of Babylon, is nevertheless worthy of attention, especially since this final period of the Neo-Babylonian empire, born at the dawn of the 6th century BC, is abundantly documented by cuneiform texts from the great Babylonian cities... The purpose of this book is to present all these intertwined destinies: first, that of the empire founded by Nebuchadnezzar II, which dominated the whole of the Near East until the fateful month of October 539. The second was that of King Nabonidus, who came to the throne almost by chance through a coup d'état, and who sought to restore a puissance that he felt was dangerously crumbling. The third was that of the simple inhabitants of Babylon or other cities, urban elders, businessmen, domestic slaves, simple workers in the service of the great temples, or Judean deportees who had been installed in Babylonia by Nebuchadnezzar for nearly half a century. The 17 years of Nabonidus' reign are thus an opportunity to appreciate the greatness of this Babylonian empire, just before the fall and before power changed hands, when the "land between the rivers" was enjoying unparalleled prosperity.Le nom et la localisation de l'antique ville de Babylone, vieille de 4000 ans, sont universellement connus. Sait-on que le 12 octobre 539 avant Jésus-Christ, lorsque les troupes de Cyrus le conquérant, fondateur de l'empire perse achéménide venu d'Iran, y pénétrèrent par surprise après une campagne militaire d'à peine un mois, et mirent fin à l'empire néo-babylonien, une page de l'histoire mondiale se tourna de manière définitive? C'en était fait pour longtemps d'une capitale d'empire autonome entre Tigre et Euphrate. On imputa la responsabilité de cette catastrophe à l'adversaire de Cyrus, le roi babylonien Nabonide. Il avait, il faut le reconnaître, toutes les apparences contre lui malgré un règne déjà long de 17 ans: usurpateur, conquérant illusoire du cœur désertique de l'actuelle Arabie saoudite, réformateur religieux sacrilège qui voulut promouvoir le dieu de la Lune à la tête du panthéon au détriment de Marduk, le dieu de Babylone. Il n'a sans doute pas été vigoureusement soutenu par les sujets de l'empire quand il fallut affronter le conquérant perse. La vie de ce personnage singulier qui fut le dernier roi de Babylone retient pourtant l'attention, d'autant plus que cette période finale de l'empire néo-babylonien, né à l'aube du 6ème siècle av. J.-C., est abondamment documentée par des textes cunéiformes issus des grandes villes babyloniennes... Le propos de ce livre est de présenter tous ces destins entremêlés: celui de l'empire fondé par Nabuchodonosor II, d'abord, qui domina tout le Proche-Orient jusqu’à ce funeste mois d'octobre 539. celui du roi Nabonide, ensuite, arrivé presque par hasard sur le trône à la faveur d'un coup d'État, et qui chercha à restaurer une puissance qu'il sentait s'effriter dangereusement, mais aussi celles de simples habitants de Babylone ou d'autres villes, enfin, notables urbains, hommes d'affaires, esclaves domestiques, simples travailleurs au service des grands temples ou déportés judéens installés par Nabuchodonosor en Babylonie depuis près d'un demi-siècle. Les 17 années du règne de Nabonide sont ainsi l'occasion d'apprécier la grandeur de cet empire de Babylone, juste avant la chute et avant que le pouvoir y change de mains, alors que le «pays entre les fleuves» profitait d'une prospérité inégalée
