Propaganda analysis in history classes: From historical knowledge to citizenship education

Relatório de Estágio do Mestrado em Ensino de História no 3º ciclo do Ensino Básico e no Ensino Secundário apresentado à Faculdade de LetrasThis paper seeks to explore the usefulness of using propagandistic sources in History classes of the 3rd Cycle of Basic and Secondary Education, due to the advantages that their use has in motivating students and in forming for citizenship and democracy. Starting from the premise that, in the current context, derived from the cultural wars, the massification of the internet, and forms of instant and almost anonymous communication, people's trust in the media and science has been shaken by the massive growth of false information.Assuming that the school has the duty to form citizens as fit as possible for democracy and for the challenges of their time, as well as the belief that History is a fundamental discipline to achieve this end, we argue that the use of propagandistic sources is a resource that should be privileged due to its partial nature and his manipulative simplifications of reality.We therefore sought to understand whether, through the study of various examples of political propaganda, it would be possible, firstly, to enhance interest and historical knowledge, and secondly, to lead to a development of critical thinking skills. The results clearly showed that not only there was a development in the way the students manipulate and read historical sources, but there was also an increase in the effort to carry out the proposed exercises, reflected in the students' participation in the proposed activities and in their written culture, reflected in bigger and better analysis texts.O presente trabalho procura explorar a utilidade do uso de fontes propagandísticas nas aulas de História no 3º Ciclo do Ensino Básico e Secundário, pelas vantagens do uso destas na motivação dos alunos e para formar para a cidadania e para a democracia. Partindo da premissa de que, no contexto atual, derivado das guerras culturais, da massificação da internet e de formas de comunicação instantânea e quase anónima, a confiança das pessoas na comunicação social e na ciência foi abalada pelo crescimento massivo de informação falsa. Partindo do pressuposto de que a escola tem o dever de formar cidadãos capacitados para a vivência em democracia e para os desafios do seu tempo, bem como na crença de que a História é uma disciplina fundamental para atingir este fim, argumentamos que o uso de fontes propagandísticas é um recurso que deve ser privilegiado pela sua natureza parcial e de manipulação e simplificação da realidade.Procurámos por isso perceber se, por via do estudo de vários exemplos de propaganda política, seria possível em primeiro lugar potenciar o interesse e o conhecimento histórico, e em segundo levar, levar a um maior desenvolvimento do espírito crítico. Os resultados evidenciaram claramente que não só houve de facto um desenvolvimento na forma como os alunos manipulam e lêem as fontes históricas, como houve um aumento no esforço para a concretização dos exercícios propostos, refletido na participação dos alunos nas atividades propostas, e no incremento da sua cultura escrita, que contou textos maiores e de maior profundidade na análise
