La brique et sa mise en œuvre en Mésopotamie, des origines à l'époque achéménide

This thesis is a monograph on a building material, the brick, and on its way of lay-out. The first part of the text gives an idea of the different practices and technics of building in ancient mesopotamia. Firstly is described the way of making bricks (mud-bricks, baked bricks, or glazed bricks) and their distinctive features (prints, inscriptions, etc.). Secondly are reported the different sorts of lay-out with chapters on mortars and plasters, on the structures of the walls, on bondings or on floors, archs, vaults, or columns, finally are presented different building practices: rituals, labour methods and organization. The second part of the thesis shows the evolution of Mesopotamian brick building, trying to focuse, for each period, on the characteristics, the evolution, and the cultural divergences. The conclusions try to see in which manner the internal social evolution of mesopotamia may have been a factor of change for the technical background of building activities: problems of standardization, labour specialization, craft or pre-industrial production, differencies between public and private architecture, social characterization of dwellings, influence of the political power on building pratices. This thesis is an attempt to show, with the study of the brick and its way of lay-out in Mesopotamia, that the social evolution was the mover of the technical evolution.Cette thèse se présente comme une monographie sur un matériau de construction, la brique, et sur son mode de mise en œuvre. Dans une première partie on a cherché à rendre compte des différentes pratiques et techniques de construction de la Mésopotamie ancienne. Il s'agit du mode de confection des briques (chaine opératoire pour les briques crues, cuites, émaillées) et de leur particularités (briques a empreintes, briques inscrites, etc.). Il s'agit ensuite des modes de mise en œuvre: mortiers et enduits, structures des murs, appareils, mode d'élaboration des sols, des arches et voutes, des colonnes, etc. Il s'agit enfin des pratiques liées à la construction : pratiques rituelles, méthodes et organisation du travail. La deuxième partie présente l'évolution de la construction en brique mésopotamienne, période par période, en cherchant à souligner, pour chaque phase, les caractéristiques particulières, les évolutions et les divergences culturelles. On a cherché en conclusion à définir de quelle manière l'évolution sociale interne de la Mésopotamie a pu influer sur les innovations techniques liées à la construction : standardisation, spécialisation du travail; production artisanale ou semi-industrielle; différenciation de la construction publique et de la construction privée, émergence de la hiérarchisation sociale de l'habitat, influence du pouvoir politique sur la construction. On a en effet cherche à démontrer, par l'étude du cas de la brique et de sa mise en œuvre en Mésopotamie, que l'évolution sociale était le moteur de l'évolution technique
