Les briques claveaux : un matériau de construction spécifique des thermes romains

Keystones bricks : a specific building material of roman thermae. Summary keystones bricks having two tenons on their bottom, and two mortises on the top, have been found during escavations on several roman thermae in Aquitaine, Narbonnaise, Iberic Peninsula and Maroco. If their use is actually known on arches building, on the other hand, up to now, archaeology has not allowed us to find which was their specific use on building of roman thermae. Tenons and mortises supported flat bricks which were making the intrados and the extrados of pipes between two arches. Then, air was able to go through the pipes made by those two arches. Hot or cold air, heating or ventilation of the arches, those two solutions are possible, nevertheless the question remains.Des briques clavées présentant deux tenons à leur base et deux encoches sur le dessus ont été mises au jour lors des fouilles de plusieurs thermes romains en Aquitaine, Narbonnaise, péninsule Ibérique et au Maroc. Si leur utilisation est attestée pour la construction de voûtes, en revanche, l’archéologie ne nous a pas permis, jusqu’à présent, de définir quel était leur rôle spécifique dans la construction de thermes romains. Les tenons et encoches étaient destinés à supporter des briques plates qui constituaient entre deux arcs clavés l’intrados et l’extrados de conduits. L’air pouvait donc circuler dans les tubes ainsi formés entre deux arcs. Air chaud ou froid, chauffage ou ventilation des voûtes, les deux solutions sont possibles ; la question reste néanmoins posée.Fincker Myriam.
