The article reconstructs the genesis and cultural background of the three German translations of Machiavelli's The Prince up to the 19th century and draws comparisons between them: Albrecht von Lenz\u2019s handwritten translation of 1692; the anonymous but first printed translation of 1714; and the one by Wolf Balthasar von Steinwehr made for the German version of Frederick the Great\u2019s Anti-Machiavel (1741)
