(1998) regard this species as a synonym of Amblyomma australiense, likely based on Roberts (1964 a, 1970), who stated that the male of Amblyomma echidnae is very similar to the male of Amblyomma australiense, and the former is probably a subspecies of the latter. Nevertheless, Amblyomma echidnae is treated as provisionally valid in Guglielmone et al.
