Relative prevalence of mastitis caused by Streptococcus uberis has been increasing over time, both nationally and internationally. S. uberis has been described as an environmental mastitis causal, although it is considered potentially contagious. The terms “well-adapted strains” or “poorly adapted strains” to the host are used to refer to contagious or environmental strains, respectively. The molecular techniques incorporation has made it possible to characterize S. uberis genetic profiles as virulence factors associated with its pathogenicity.
