Paddy culture and marsh development in Buyenzi country. With almost 400 hab./sq.km, Buyenzi which is situated in the Northern part of the central plateau, is the most densely populated region of Burundi. There is little vacant land, with the exception of marshes, vast systems of the valleys deeply set in the plateau. But its development is so difficult, especially for the largest ones, that until 1980, they were sparsely occupied despite intense demographic pressure. Only used for dry season crops from June to December, these marshes are too wet, and often flooded for the rest of the year.
