'The government knew that it could not expect those farmers to agree with the legislation'

Responding to a published letter from Mr. Evans, Minister for Works and Water Supply, Mr. Graham MacKinnon states that he along with the farmers attended recent public meetings would agree that the clearing controls are necessary. Mr. MacKinnon said the Opposition spokesman on Agriculture, Mr. Evans is being less than honest if he pretends he was not fully aware of what was transpiring, with the legislation not being new, since it is an extension of the provisions that had been applied in the Wellington Dam catchment in 1976. Mr. MacKinnon says that the Public Works Department has co-operated fully with Mr. Whittington and WISALTS in every way that he has requested when carrying out the research project at Batalling Creek on the Wellington Dam catchment.
