Farmers reject land clearing legislation : Minister faces heated attack

Article explains the state government faces open rebellion against its new farm land clearing controls in southern catchment areas. At a meeting in Perillup, the Minister for Works and Water Supplies, Graham MacKinnon was told bluntly, from about 300 angry and vocal farmers, that the farmers would not accept the legislation. The farmers demanded a review of the legislation and the regulations and guidelines associated with it. The issue of salinity control took a back seat to farmer concern over the "bureaucratic interference with the rights of private landowners". Representatives from local shires spoke of the lack of liaison with the local government.
