Govt trying to justify its clearing bans

Letters feature discusses H.S. Whittington's views on the Minister for Works and Water Supplies, Mr. G.C. McKinnon's press release on the interceptor bank trials in the Batalling Creek area appearing to be an attempt by the State Government to justify its actions in implementing land clearing bans. No one could draw conclusions from the one years' data and having no relative data for comparison. The work at Batalling Creek is a pilot test to establish whether a water harvesting technique can effectively control the quantity of salt entering the Wellington Weir. The area can only be accurately monitored and assessed if the data over the next few years (possibly five) shows that this type of control is possible. The figures taken from the report make it difficult to understand how the writer for the Public Works Department arrived at the conclusions. One interesting aspect of the report is that not one record was taken inside the experimental area.
