REPRESENTAÇÕES GEOGRÁFICAS DA IDENTIDADE NACIONAL: O CASO NORTE-AMERICANO

This article relates the image of the conquest of the West to the construction of national identity in the United States. The conquest of new territories during the nineteenth century was narrated as a mythical version of the historic process. It presents different lineages of authors who analyse and criticise the theme of the frontier and shows how the frontier, the west or nature are present in the interpretation of the meaning of the creation of national parks in America. Finally, it indicates how geographical space reappears today, at a moment when globalization and uprooting are questioning the natural relationship between nation and territory.L’article établit un rapport entre l’image de la conquête de l’ouest et la construction de 1’identité nationale aux Etats-Unis. Le récit de la conquête des nouveaux espaces territoriaux au XIXe siècle propose une version mythique du processus historique. L’article présente aussi les différentes traditions intellec- tuelles qui ont fait la critique du sujet “frontière”, tout en montrant comment la frontière, l’ouest ou la nature sont presents dans 1’interprétation du signifié de la creation des pares nationaux en Amérique. À la fin, 1’ article indique comment 1’espace géographique réapparait aujourd’hui, au moment oil la globalisation et le déracinement mettent en cause le rapport naturel entre la nation et le territoire.O presente artigo relaciona a imagem da conquista do Oeste com a construção da identidade nacional nos Estados Unidos. A conquista de novos espaços territoriais, ocorrida durante o século XIX, foi narrada sob a forma de uma versão mítica do processo histórico. Apresenta diferentes linhagens de autores que analisam e criticam o tema da fronteira; mostra como fronteira, Oeste ou natureza estão presentes na interpretação do significado da criação dos parques nacionais na América.
