Objective: evaluate the scientific production related to the hygiene conditions of school kitchens since the promulgation of the RDC 216/2004. Methods: Systematic literature review from electronic databases (Medline, Lilacs, SciELO) and in national journals not indexed, from September 2004 to October 2013. Results: seven articles that evaluated 704 establishments were included. There was growth in the number of publications in the period of 2009-2012, with a concentration in the Northeast region of Brazil and public schools. The mean of compliance was 43.7% and the lowest levels adequacy were related to the categories of responsibilities and documentation and registration.
