Land care awareness is picking up

The severity of land degradation and community resolve to do something about it, was a heartening sign, noted the chairman of the Soil Conservation Advisory Committee, Elton Butcher. In Western Australia, 14 soil conservation districts have been established since the Soil Conservation Act was revised in October 1982 with another nine districts to be proclaimed soon. Soil conservation district assistance programs have been provided by both the state and federal governments for the first time. For projects where there was a significant community benefit, the State Government has provided $125,000 funding, with the Federal Government providing $67,000 to Western Australia during the year. The funding from the Federal Government was used to help landholder-initiated work in three soil conservation districts, Jerramungup, Fitzroy River and East Perenjori.
