Soil degradation a national worry

Primary Industry Minister, John Kerin spoke at the opening of the Intensive Cropping and Better Land Management Seminar held at Muresk Agricultural College recently. He talked about land degradation and the Government's role in fighting land degradation. The formation of the National Soil Conservation Policy would play an important role in the management of Australia's lands, but Mr Kerin said that formulating land management policies was beyond the bounds of just one government. He also said that soil conservation, although traditionally the State's responsibility, was a national disaster and that it required national direction. Mr Kerin is pleased at the number of organisations tackling Western Australia's land degradation with the move within Western Australia to form soil conservation districts.
