Getting together on soil erosion

Soil erosion is too big a problem for farmers to tackle on their own, becoming part of the solution, not just part of the problem is an experience shared. In 1967, 16 landowners in the Inverell district of New South Wales formed a farmer-directed, self-help conservation group to promote utilisation with conservation of soil and water resources on a community not individual basis. The following year there were 56 farmers in three affiliated, autonomous groups in three catchments. In 1981, two of these groups are very much alive due to a whole new way of looking at farming, including the use of farm plans, diversified cropping, experimentation, education, business management, working bees on farms, joint ownership of equipment, organised marketing and social support.
