Popular fiction: The power of genres and genre canons

У статті розглядається категорія жанру в масовій літературі. Жанр інтерпретований як маркетингова категорія, що визначає поетику та функціонування індустрії популярного письменства. Оглядаються теорії К. Гелдера, П. Свірські, Дж. Кавелті, А. Бергера стосовно жанру, жанрового канону, співвідношення жанру і “формули”. Висвітлено деякі механізми відтворення жанрових канонів через приписи спеціалізованих видавництв, письменницькі самовчителі й діяльність об’єднань літераторів за жанрами.The article deals with the category of genre in relation to popular fiction. Genre is interpreted here as a marketing category which defines both poetics and functioning of the popular fiction industry. The author reviews Ken Gelder’s, Peter Swirski’s, John Cawelti’s, and Arthur A. Berger’s concepts of genre and genre canon as well as their ideas on correlation between genre patterns and formulas. The paper also highlights some mechanisms used to reproduce genre canons (publishing houses’ guidelines, writer’s guides, literary organisations devoted to promoting certain genres, etc.)
