Contrabando y defraudación. Comercio ilegal en la frontera Chiapas-Guatemala, 1826-1842

Using the quantitative analysis of court trials regarding confiscated merchandize along the border regionbetween 1826 and 1842, this paper aims to demonstrate how two territories –Guatemala and Chiapas– that belonged to two different federations kept close commercial ties in spite of Chiapas having separated jurisdictionally from the former Captaincy General of Guatemala. This seeks to helps to understand the construction ofthe Chiapas-Guatemala border.El artículo tiene como objetivo contribuir al conocimiento del proceso de la construcción de la frontera Chiapas-Guatemala. A partir del análisis cuantitativo de juicios de comiso de mercancía de contrabando realizados en la región, de 1826 a 1842, se demuestra como dos territorios -Guatemala y Comitán- que pertenecían a dos países distintos siguieron conservaron estrechos vínculos comerciales, a pesar de la separación jurisdiccional de Chiapas de la antigua Capitanía General de Guatemala
