Nueva Francia y Nueva Granada frente al contrabando: reflexiones sobre el comercio ilícito en el contexto colonial

This paper presents a series of reflections on the phenomenon of smuggling, based on the specific cases of two American colonies, New France and New Granada, during the 17th and 18th centuries. The purpose is to highlight the characteristics common to illicit trade in both these colonies despite their notorious differences. Specifically, the paper focuses on five different traits that typified smuggling in both New France and New Granada and which make it possible to explain its continued existence there throughout the colonial period: first, the socioeconomic needs underlying the rise and continuation of smuggling; secondly, the measures taken by the authorities to repress this illegal activity; thirdly, the role of merchants and their relative independence with respect to authority; fourthly, the topic of profitability and subsequent enrichment, marked by corruption and the influence of social networks in official affairs; fifth and finally, the presence of indigenous groups, their co-existence with authorities in the conquered territories, and their relationship to trade.En este artículo se presentan unas reflexiones sobre el fenómeno del contrabando a partir de los casos de dos colonias del continente americano, la Nueva Francia y la Nueva Granada, en los siglos XVII y XVIII. Nuestro propósito consiste en destacar los rasgos comunes del comercio ilícito en dos colonias que presentan por lo demás unas diferencias notables. Concretamente, se detallan cinco rasgos que comparten la Nueva Francia y la Nueva Granada en cuanto a la existencia del contrabando y permiten inclusive explicar su persistencia durante todo el periodo colonial. Primero, la necesidad socio-económica que subyace a la aparición y al mantenimiento del contrabando. Segundo, las medidas tomadas por las autoridades para reprimir la actividad ilegal. Tercero, el papel de los comerciantes y su autonomía relativa frente a la autoridad. Cuarto, el tema de la rentabilidad y del consecuente enriquecimiento, atravesado por la corrupción y el funcionamiento de las redes sociales en los asuntos oficiales. Quinto, la presencia indígena en los territorios conquistados, su convivencia con las autoridades y su relación con el comercio
