In his Urdu novels, Balwant Singh has fully portrayed the lives of hardworking peasants living in the villages of Punjab and the Sikhs who died in their name and honor. His Urdu novels’’Ckak Piran Ka Jassa ‘‘and’’Night, Thief and Moon ‘‘depict the economy and society of the villages of Punjab and especially of the Jat Sikhs.During his tenure, Balwant Singh has described the political issue and problems in the villages, the daily commotion and the surrounding conditions. His novels mention the dialect, dress, lifestyle and customs of the villagers. He also mentioned the plains of Punjab, orchards, rahats, plowing oxen, rivers and seasons. The novel’’Chak Piran Ka Jassa ‘‘ is a social and cultural novel steeped in romance. The lifestyle of rural Muslims and Sikhs in Punjab has been almost the same, the only difference being between religion and religious festivals. The novel deals with the family rivalry and enmity of the Sikhs. Although Balwant Singh appears nationalist in his novels’’Ckak Piran Ka Jass ‘‘and’’Night, Thief and Moon ‘‘he has portrayed the life of every person living in the villages of Punjab. He has also portrayed Punjabi girls in his novels. In his novels, he mentions Bombay and Calcutta as symbols of British colonialism.
