This text discusses the discovery, production and trade of clove bark, a native plant from the Amazon Forest, throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Contrary to arguments presented in Luso-Brazilian historiography, which has mainly interpreted the colonial Amazon region through the idea of isolation, the exploitation of clove bark can only be comprehended if the Portuguese Amazon region is considered within a network of global, transatlantic and transamazonian connections.Este texto analiza el proceso de descubrimiento, producción y comercialización, en los siglos XVII y XVIII, de una planta llamada en portugués «cravo do Maranhão», nativa de la selva amazónica.
